Mystery Hunt was awesome.

More importantly, I got accepted into Carnegie Mellon.

Life is good, no?

Oct. 17th, 2006 03:23 am Where should I go to school next year?

My parents wisely want me to examine other schools in addition to Carnegie Mellon to increase my chance of getting a good financial aid/scholarship package somewhere... (I already have a "safe" affordable school pretty much set. So I just need to get some more good tech schools on my radar now)

I just came back from a camping trip with my curch youth group. Lots of fun. Not like Mathcamp fun, but fun in a different way.

Just talking about everything that happened would get pretty boring. Basically we hiked, we canoed, and it rained so we played lots of Munchkin. But we played another game that made me feel right at home at Mathcamp that I now need to share.

The story starts at the very start. People in my youth group like to play the nose game to see who gets the short end of the draw. For example, someone needs to go fill a pitcher of water. Someone will say "Nose game to see who fills the pitcher" and everyone will then put their finger on their nose, and last person to do so needs to fill the pitcher. Thats how the nose bopping started.

Next, one of the Dads from my church brought his two little kids. We were sitting with them, and I started trying to bop their nose for no real reason at all. They, of course, tried to get away and then bop my nose. And it was lots of fun.

Now onto the real stuff. So we were playing this game called "Signs" Signs is a lot like Thumper, for those who have played it at Fun, but instead of big crazy hand motions and random words, the hand motions are quite and sneaky and you say nothing. Instead, someone sits in the middle. Like in Thumper, each person has their own sign. To pass the sign around the circle, you need to recive the sign by doing your sign, and then do someone elses sign to pass it to them. The goal is to do it such that the person in the middle doesn't catch you. There are, of course, some basic strategies to help you do this. For example, when you are passed the sign, you do not need to receive it right away. If the person in the middle is looking right at you, wait to receive the sign. That way, even if he asks you if you have the sign you and honestly say "No" and the recive the sign as soon as he turns his back. (Once you send the sign to someone, you need to keep sending it to the same person until they do their sign to recive it).

Anyways, I could go on and on about how to be sneaky in this game. In truth, I wasn't very good. By my sign was bopping my nose, which greatly amused everyone else there. I am not sure why, but by the end of the trip everyone was boping their nose around me and saying "You bop your nose" in a very strange accent. It was all very wierd and very mathcampy and it made me happy. Too bad I never had time to tell them all about Nose Functions...

I blame the monkeys.

If you comment on this post:
1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll challenge you to try something.
3. I'll pick a color that I associate with you.
4. I'll tell you something I like about you.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something I've always wanted to ask you.
8. If you wish, I will do it in the game of four, or something else like that. No F.T or M.L, Tell me what to do.

Jul. 15th, 2006 11:58 am Chocolate Bagel Date Pear

I figgured I might as well update this before someone like Yuri steals the story for their LJ. So it all started like two-three days ago. Yuri and I were talking with Robert, when Robert got a package for his birthday in a couple of days. Sarah then commented that Saturday was fMatt's birthday as well. So I had the bright idea of getting lots of balloons and camping outside fMatt's door Saturday Morning.

We gathered a handful of campers to help us, with a bunch of all-to-eager JCs. And we all agreed to wait outside his door at 7. Everything appeared to be going as planned..

Of course, not everything goes as planned. fMatt fell asleep in the office and Cindy and Sarah had to send him back up to his room. Luckily, none of us were up then so the whole surprize wasn't runied. It also ment fMatt was rather sleepy though. So we spent the next hours blowing up balloons(and ballons inside of balloons) and blue-painters-taping them balloons to the wall and what not. When then went up and fired balloons at Robert as well because we were bored. Finally, at 8 we were tired of waiting, and banged on fMatt's door. "fMatt! fMatt! The Cheerleaders have kidnapped a camper!" We shouted. Finally he got up and opened his door a crack. We made lots of noise and threw balloons at him, singing "Chocolate Bagel Date Pear, Chocolate Bagel Date Pear! Chocolate Bagel Date Blackberry Jam, Chocolate Bagel Date Pear!" fMatt's face was very much like Dan's classic "What is wrong with you people" look and there was much rejoicing. fMatt went back to bed, and we all went to bang on David's door despite the fact that it wasn't Bang on David's Door Hour.

Mar. 28th, 2006 10:52 am I am gonna update this for once!

Hehe. It has been awhile, no?

So I was in my Comp Sci lab. And we were trying to rotate this rectangle by 45 degrees. And so they told us to us x = x*cos(theta) + y*sin(theta) and y = -x*sin(theta) + y*cos(theta). But of course, for some reason they thought that the sin and cos functions included in cmath used degrees, instead of radians. It wasn't like they were trying to see if we could catch it, they actually seemed to think that part of the program they gave us would work. On top of that, when I mentioned it to the TA, he shruged it off like "Whatever".

Guess thats what happens when you take a class at an engineering school...

Feb. 16th, 2006 04:14 pm WBK?

Well.. now that i've gotten a book on PHP and had my friend teach me a rundown on XHTML/CSS I am about ready to get my website up within the next two or three days(probably saturday, as I'll have time then). I still don't have a perfect domain name picked out though... right now I'm leaning towards werebunnykitchen, but if you have a better idea-here's the time to give me a poke and make me change my mind before it's too late.

Feb. 15th, 2006 07:04 pm You don't say...

On the topic of College Spam... I recently got this beauty from Drew University. It read:

"Drew, I really think you would enjoy Drew. Drew is the perfect combination of a first-rate academic experience and great fun. It is an excellent choice!

Let me give you some more information about Drew along with a copy of Making a Good Match."

Who is to say this spam mail isn't at least intertaining, even though it isn't really helpful when it comes to getting information on the types of colleges I'm looking at?

P.S. Anyone who says "HE DREW" in the comments box will have some evil happen to them.

Feb. 10th, 2006 11:15 am Moo!

I lost. Meh.

Sitting at RPI again, waiting for my mom to pick me up. The labs are supposed to be two hours long, but they never seem to take that long. It is kind of sad, I was hoping this course would challenge me and all that, but it has been rather basic. After the 7th lab/lecture, we have only just started to cover IF/THEN/ELSE statements. So yeah. Hopefully the pace will pick up and all that.

Chapter Mathcounts for my region is this Saturday. I'm not involved in any way, but I have a bunch of friends who can still compete, so thats always interesting.

Not a whole lot else happening. Need to talk with my about the website stuff some more. The only main problem being he doesn't really even know whats going on with it all. So yeah :P.

Winter Olympics start tonight. Thats always fun stuff. Now that we have TIVO we can record all the events, and the skip through the boring stuff(Ice skating/cross-country sking/Curling) and comercials are actually watch fun stuff(Downhill Sking/Free Style Skiing/Ski Jumping/Snowboarding, Ice Hockey, Bobseld/luge/skeleton). But speaking on winter, its the middle of February and there isn't any snow in sight. What is with that? Been a rather mild winter this year... but of course, that isn't a bad thing. :P

Anyways, my Mom should be here soon, so I need to finish up here.

Feb. 4th, 2006 09:56 pm Spam R us.

Not much to say. I took the PSAT last fall and this past week I started getting loads of college spam, most of them from places i've never heard of nor want to hear of again. Its starting to get pretty amusing :P

Jan. 30th, 2006 01:02 pm Why are trees higher in Europe?

I felt a strange but sudden urdge to update this again. Now I need to find a good topic to update it on. Not a whole lot has happened in the past two days, nor is a whole lot going to happen soon. But hey. At least stuff is happening.

Had another comp sci lecture today. Still very basic. At least we are programming now, but still havn't surprassed the very little C++ that I already know. Hopefully that will change within the next few weeks. Today we simply wrote a program that allowed us to create extra verses to "Old MacDonald had a farm" by using a function defined for the animal and the sound it makes. So yeah, still rather basic/useless. ;-).

AMC 12-A is tomorrow. I'm shooting for around 140. My score matters this year, so I don't want to risk a low score to get a really high one, but Im thinking I should be able to get 22 or 23 right, which would place me right around that 140 mark. As long as I get near 140 or higher, i'll probably shoot for a 150 on the B even if it means randomly guessing.

Not much else to say. Still a week to the superbowl. The week inbetween the championship games and the superbowl is one of the boringist weeks in all sports. That and those three weeks in febuary. Once you get to march, College Basketball becomes interesting, and then in april we finally get baseball. But yeah, this weekend theres like nothing. :P.

On a unrelated note, I hope to be getting myself a website sometime in the not-so-distant future.(My Dad has a hosting plan complete with a couple of free domain names for his small bussiness, so luckily it doesn't appear like it will cost me anything). The only thing it really needs is a name. I've been drawing blanks when it comes to that. All the good ideas I get seem to be already taken. <_<. Any ideas? Oh, and incase you are still wondering this post has nothing to do with the subject. I just couldn't think of a good subject so I choose something random. Muahaha-ack-cough-cough-sputtle...

Jan. 28th, 2006 12:16 pm Yes I am still alive.

I was just realizing its been over a week sence I updated this thing. No, I havn't forgotten. There just hasn't been anything interesting to blog about. It is not like my life had been dull and boring, just nothing intesting enough has happened, or i've never been in a place with nothing else to do. In fact, there still isn't anything interesting to write about yet, so i'll keep this short.

Jan. 19th, 2006 10:39 am Little Tom Thumbless

Things are feeling a little deja vu.(No, I will not add the little stuff over those letters because it takes to much time and because I don't know which one gets what). I am again sitting in the student union at RPI writing a LJ entry.  Mayby that is because I am stuck here again--this time because my dad had a meeting right when my class ended, so he wont be here for another hour or so. And thus I have time to kill. Things are different, of course, I accually had a class today, I am sitting in a different corner of the room, and this is my 2nd entry, not my first. But other than that, they feel very much the same.

The class, the opening lecture in a Computer Science 1 course, was rather blah, which is to be expected for the first lecutre, I guess. The professor spent the first thirty minutes going over the class structure and the next twenty about computer basics. You know, about how computers are really fast but really stupid--they are just so fast they appear smart. They don't know what eleven times eight is, all they know are a bunch of zero's and one's which they then use over and over again to find eleven times eight. He then compared a computer program to making tea--you can't just say "make tea" you must first tell it to boil the water, clean a cup, add a tea bag, pour the water in, wait for it to brew, and serve it. But of course, that is not enough. You need to tell it  clean the tea pot, measure enough water, pour the water in, light the stove, wait for the water to boil, ect.. ect... ect... Lastly, he talked about number systems--about how we have ten fingers so we like base 10. But computer's can't stand base ten and preffer bases such as 2,8, and 16. He then went on to segguest that we could slice off the thumbs off all our children unless the human race was thumbless. That way we would only have eight fingers and use base eight. Computer would have to adjust from being normally base 16 to base 8,  and we would have to to adjust everything from base 10 to base 8, but in the end, every one would be happy and [info]lorimt would get to prove that thumbs are, in fact, unnessary afterall.

And thus went fifty minutes which were no where near as intertaining as I have made them sound. The proffessor never accually said we should slice off everyone's thumbs to make computer's happy. He just said that if we did slice off their thumbs, they would use base 8 in kindergarten. But yeah, it a first class. I am sure the rest of the course will be much more interesting.
</span>
Btw, I am still figuring out everything here. How does one hide test so that it doesn't tie up the page and all that? Could an experienced person please comment on that--thanks!
